I would also like to say that while acetone may be useful for extracting unreactants, over time and above acetone also attacks perfectly cured phenolic. IMO it is a destructive test therefore the test part should be isolated from and not returned to the batch.
 
So you are telling me that the test will tell me if the part is cured properly or resin rich?
 
Part cured phenolic resin dissolves into most alcohols and acetone is one of the more agressive solvents.
We use acetone only for cleaning solvent.
To test a phenolic part for cure, we rely on a special hot compression test developed in-house. Properly cured and partially cured phenolic resin are hard and brittle at RT. However, partially cured phenolic becomes plastic when heated to say 150 deg. C, whereas properly cured phenolic maintains most of its RT mechanical properties well beyond 150 deg. C.
