ACI 318: Side-Face Blowout (*sigh*)

Would side-face blowout apply if the failure cone is no longer intercepting the element face? See crude sketch below...[bigcheeks]

My initial thoughts are "no", but I have nothing to support this based on the literature available.

No, because in plan view the cone keeps going.
 
Is there a way to justify this through available code? As far as I can tell, it's tough to get rid of this requirement.
 
Side face blowout is to a free edge. This isn't a free edge.
 
The code doesn’t directly address situations like this where the concrete isn’t a perfect rectangle. Anyway, I agree that there won’t be a side face blowout failure in the location of concern.

I would simplify the analysis by assuming the top surface of concrete is at the height of the inside corner. This should be conservative. If that works, no need to look into it any further, imo. I would assume any extra concrete is only making things stronger.
 
Side face blowout is more of a pseudo-pressure failure than a tensile cone failure. It appears as a cone-ish because of how it fails.

If your scale is accurate I'd likely ignore based on it not really being a free edge and where the 'pressure' originates is well restrained by a significant mass of concrete.
 
You’re not near a free edge, so the concrete next to the anchor has nowhere to go. What is the concern?

This isn’t a critical failure mode for this anchor, but if you’re worried, you can still check it using your large edge distance.
 
Presumably by your geometry you'd also have a top and bottom row of reinforcement going through there intercepting the failure surface.
