Hi,
I am working on a project which will have many wall piers (ACI definition). Lw/Bw for these wall piers is less than 2.5, so the alternative requirements of 18.10.8.1 do not apply. This section references 18.7.4, 18.7.5, and 18.7.6. 18.7.5.3 calls out the maximum spacing of confining reinforcement for columns. The wall pier is 8" in thickness, so if I were to follow the letter of the code, I would need ties at 2" o.c. (1/4 minimum dimension of the column). This to me seems like overkill for a wall pier with a maximum DC of 45%, even when considering Mpr. Does anyone know if there is something else in the code that would allow me to disregard the thickness of the wall pier?
