Acid Clean Coolers on a GSU Transformer (375 MVA)

The transformer is rated at: 375 MVA, 161/22.5 KV, 3 phase. THe transformer was put in service in 1963.

Our plant is looking at acid cleaning the coolers on said tranformer. In the past we put raw water on the coolers to cool down the transformer in the summmer. This caused the transformer coolers to form a hard scale buildup which has been extremely difficult to remove. We have tried the dry blast media (baking soda, the company that cleaned said tranformers was HYDROCHEM)had some success.

QUESTION: Who else has acid cleaned transformer coolers and was it succussful?

I have had success with this operation to remove limescale and iron buildup from the radiators. I'd suggest a company which specializes in this work, especially with a transfomrer which appears to be as critical as this one for service.
