Actuator type?

I am a structural engineer working on a weekend project. I need something to move a 1000 lb load 4-6 inches on 12V DC. The load will only be a pulling load in a straight line. It will need to pull to raise the load hold it until pins can be engaged and then be able to lower it after the pins are removed. I would like to keep the amperage as low as possible and travel can be fairly slow, within reason. Also I am limited in space to roughly 4" wide and 6" length. The 6" length would be the total retracted length. The depth is negotiable though. Any advice on what type of actuator I would be looking for to fit this application?

Hydraulic looks like a fair guess. You can trade motor power (current) against speed of travel fairly easily, and the size requirements are quite restrictive.

An automobile screw jack driven by a 12 Volt DC gearhead motor can easily do it.

Having worked in the winch industry for many years, I would not recommend using the 3000 lb 12v remote controlled winch as suggested.

Even though the rating is sufficient and the lift is a short distance, winches are not for hoisting and this type winch is typically mfg in China, with an unreliable remote control and low quality overall. You get what you pay for.

If there is any chance of the load dropping and causing injury and/or property damage, a hoist should be used. Winches are for pulling, not hoisting.
