Adams/View - start and end of translation

Hi all,

I'm trying to model a hydraulic cylinder in Adams/View.

I'd like to have the piston sliding inside the cylinder. A translational joint constraints the sliding direction, but the piston is still able to move through the cylinder.

How do I make the piston stop, so it cannot pass through the cylinder?

The simplest way is to model the actual situation, using contact and springs. This is also rather slow computationally. A more complex method would be to define a non linear bushing with a lot of zero rate travel on centre. An even more complex, but very fast method is to write a bit of solver code to work out when the piston hits the end stop and then apply a very stiff spring.

Okay, I discovered Contact under Special Forces :)

My simulation failed at first because I was using STEP files which were imported as shells instead of solids.

I will try to continue with this model, as I'm new to Adams and everything I do is already sufficiently complex for me...

Thanks for your reply!

Importing 3d objects has always seemed to be robust to me, and usually a complete waste of time to make managers happy with the animations. Hard-core ADAMS users tend to run with graphics switched off. (True) We read the binary output files. (Liar). Good Luck.
