I found a custom addin menu someone has created. It works pretty well. It gives you an ini file that you can modify to your needs. To get it to work you have to open the .dll in SW and then it is available in the Tools addin section. My hangup is how do I get it loaded everytime I launch SW? I thought it might be because I was using a specific template, but I addedin the .dll and saved as a template. Still didn't work. I'm sure I'm missing something pretty simple just can't put my finger on it.

I'm using SW04 sp4.1

Thanks in advance.

This doesn't sound right. You should only need to load the addin to SW one time and it should be available from then on. Save as template??? This doesn't sound right at all.

Next time, look for the addin under "Tools --> Addins" before trying to reload it. It could be the addin is loaded but not turned on.

TheTick is right, that doesn't sound right at all.

Next time you open Solidworks go to Tools-Add-Ins and check to see if your Add-In is selected. If it is, you can right-click anywhere on the standard toolbar and see if your custom toolbar appears in the list (you can select it if it does and it should appear).

When you create a custom toolbar you are required to specify which document types you want the toolbar to appear for. It could be that your toolbar is set up only to appear for parts or something.

Also make sure the DLL is at the same location on your hard drive as it was last time you opened solidworks (Solidworks had to be able to find the DLL to load it).

That's what I was thinking as well. I was trying to put the .dll out on the network drive. Is this not possible? Before I had it on the network it was on my hard drive but it still didn't load everytime.

FYI for everyone. Found the answer. I had to be logged on as an Admin on the network to gain access to some files during install. Once I did that everything worked as it should have.

Typically, addins should be installed locally. I write and run addins from network, but I wouldn't recommend it.

An add-in DLL is a DLL like any other. Windows requires registry pointers to the DLL in order for it to run in the Windows environment. SolidWorks also requires some registry pointers to the addin DLL.

When you drag-drop an addin DLL to SolidWorks, SolidWorks takes care of registering the addin with Windows and with SolidWorks. This should be a one-time-only deal.

Sounds like the registry is somehow lose track of the addin components. This is more likely to happen when addins are on a network.

That add-in program for menu's was created by Mike Brainard. I downloaded from Scott's web site and I think it's pretty good.

It still has some bugs like wrong spelling and menus supposed to gray out in drawing environment do not but otherwise it's pretty cool and creates an easy way to keep your macros together and readily available.

In my case reloaded everytime without any problem. I do have administrator rights on my local machine.

I thought about that when I read this but wasn't sure if that is what you needed or not.

Thank Mike for it I think he is lurking out here. He is also one of my customers... good man he is!

I hope that works out for you.
