Hello All,

My Engineering Firm was just awarded a project to replace (2) existing nozzles with (4) new nozzles that are a size larger on a boiler steam drum. We are contracting out the engineering of the nozzles to a proper PE, and we are doing the piping design that will attach to the nozzles. I am a mechanical EIT, and I wanted to do some preliminary research on what is required to add new nozzles to the boiler. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be very helpful. I am sifting through Section VIII currently, assuming this is the correct place to start.

Thank you in advance.

The boiler steam drum can be under ASME B&PV Code, Section I, Power Boilers. If so, you need to review the rules for nozzles and determine proper attachment and reinforcement. This work would should be under the National Board Inspection Code, if applicable.

It would be worthwhile to contact the original manufacturer- if they are responsive and in business, that could be the simplest route to go, on both the engineering and the installation.

Design your piping so the nozzle loads are low. Then give these loads to the PE designing the nozzles so they had extra reinforcing if required.

KevinNZ,

That is what I intend to do. However, I am looking to understand the code more and understand the process of how the nozzles should be designed. I will collaborate with our contracted Engineering Company but I wanted to do some some preliminary research so I can learn from them as well.

I am currently looking in Section I, PG-32 Openings and Compensation. Would this be a good starting point?

Thank you.
