Adding Surface Texture

I am trying to model a project where one face of the body has a repeated, patterned texture.

Is there a simple way to add surface texture to a face, or do I have to sketch each of the repetitions and then instance them? For example is there a way I could easily apply a mesh pattern to a freeform contoured surface?

Do you have to model in the features for manufacturing or is this just for visualization (rendering)?

If it is for a render, you can apply textures to the model faces.
 
I'm interested in this one also.

I got a side marker that the customer wants to add acid etched v beads to the model. It goes around the part o a contoured surface.

Good thing the program was put on hold (Saab).

Cowski, thanks for the reply. It is not for rendering sadly. I need the pattern to be 3D and connected to the part, so that I can use it later to make a negative mold.

I could do it manually for all the parts that I am making, but I figured it would be smart to ask if there was a built in function to iterate a pattern onto a surface at the very least for the next time if I do not find an answer by my deadline. Thanks again.
 
If it needs to be wrapped a close approximation may be obtained for moderate curvature by overcrowning a flat model. It can create annoyingly heavy data. The technique I used is called global shaping by surface, and the attached example an old one from NX-3, although I don't know that the function has changed much since.

This function may only offer a limited approximation of what you require and for some lens geometry it may not produce an optically correct result. But for quick and nasty morphing of decorative stuff in line of draw it is a winner.
