adding extra additives to a already fully formulated engine or gear oil comes with some inherent dangers. since the user normally does not know the exact composition of the oil or the package to be added, he has no way knowing whether the components when mixed will do some good or some bad or perhaps both. and of course these products are usually backed up by some irrelevant tests and never by full scale engine tests as required in the ACEA or API testing sequences. so there is no objective proof of their claims.

that does not include that some products might work, but there is no reliable way of knowing they do. "nano" nowadays is a buzzword - in future we most likely will see a lot of "nano stuff" introduced in lubricants and preliminary scientific testing results seem to indicate that a lot of knowledge we have may need some reconsidering when those developments progress, but at this moment in time it is still far to early to know whether that actually will happen.

for the time being the "advertorial" in the video can be categorized in the same category as all those gadgets that promise you a sixpack in a few weeks....

I remember when 'moly' was all the rage and everyone was selling pre-blackened oil. It didn't sound like a real good idea to me. That said, I have little experience with oil additives.

I have, however, tried a sample of fuel additives, and the only one that ever made a noticeable difference was Marvel Mystery Oil, added to the fuel tank at somewhere around 4 fluid ounces per 12 gallons of fuel. It does a miraculous job of removing varnish from injectors, and all sorts of goo from carburetors, usually after ten miles or less of driving. The local carburetor wizard used to insist that a car be driven on MMO for a few miles; he would then look at it if the problem persisted.

One of the first claims is that in engines of today, lubricants aren't 'keeping up'. So how did they achieve 7,500-10,000 mile oil change intervals in vehicles with >150K mi service life expectations? Better mileage and higher power densities thrown in to boot?? Oh well, everybody's got to make a living I suppose . . .

And Jay says he 'knows several guys' who have suffered the dreaded flat tappet cam failure from new-fangled oil. Doesn't everybody seem to? Does he mean that all his cars have always used Archoil, which is why he has no direct experience in his vast collection with this supposedly pervasive problem?? C'mon Jay, what's your secret??

Well, Jay Leno probably does know a fair number of guys in the car biz.
And probably a number of them have the $$$ to play with fun flat-tappet things.
Add the "heard it from" factor, and it is a fairly plausible claim.
(this from a Jay with much less money than that Jay...)

I hold Jay Leno in high regard for many reasons, but I am saddened to see him shilling like this. Surely he isn't hurting?? What's next, hemorrhoid cream???

I agree with Ross; Jay is a genuine car guy's guy and I was disappointed to see him in the ads.
