ADV Sim and NX Nastran Issues

Hey all

Have a couple of questions:

1. We just got the newest NX update 7.0.1. Among other things in the what’s new docs is also the option for "Color bar display refinement". There are two pics in there (see attachment), where one can see a result plot with the appropriate color bar. What’s interesting is the number format of the color bar. It’s not in exponential form. So, my question is, where can i define the format of the color bar in general, besides just font and other limited options, available in customer defaults or in post view definition? I know it sounds perhaps trivial and non-important, but we really have a need for exact color bar number format and plot title and subtitle definitions.

2. This one is a bit related to the first question. When we run jobs with NX Nastran (either 6 or 7), and we have several load cases in one sim (up to 90 load cases), we name each of these cases. Later on, when we are importing or reading the results in the post view, all names are gone and we only get simple sequential numbering of load cases and steps. ((

Any idea, how can we obtain these names in post view? We tried several ways, also manually defining titles, subtitles and labels of load cases in the nastran input deck (.dat), but without any success.

This one may also seem trivial, but for us these names are important, since later on in the process we have our on evaluation software, where these names from the model are needed.

For the moment this is also a mayor setback that prevents us from migrating totally from I-Deas to NX. And please, I know we can reprogramme our software, but there are years of production in there and I suppose that reading load case names is something that NX should do with ease (if I-Deas can, why not NX?).

I run NX 7.5 BETA (I am betatester) and I can tell you that postprocessing is really improved in the beta, version after version NX AdvSim is becaming more & more powerful. Said that, I agree with you in the problems reported (I have filed IR of the problem with load cases), please contact GTAC and file IR for those things that you believe are not done OK, this is the best way that developers will learn from user needs and improve the software.
NX7.5 will be the best version for ever, impressing all the new pre&postprocessing features, gold level!!.

Thanks for your answer and cheering me up with new hopes for 7.5.
Is there any chance to see a list of what's new-s for 7.5? I have looked already at the web docs of NX 7.5, where some caveats and new features are already described, but must admit that i expected a lot more. Not that we are not happy with NX already (otherwise we would not using it ) ), but as mentioned, we are undertaking some heavy testing of competition pre- and post-processors, since NX still lacks a lot of functionality that we require from our future core FEA system. Hence, a list or even some docs of new stuff in 7.5 would be a strong pro argument. By the way, is it already a bit clearer when 7.5 is launching?

And another one: what does take to become a NX and NX Nastran beta tester?

OK and the last one ) :
since you obviously have more experience filing IRs, here's one we desperately need, elastic beam releases, as are those in I-Deas. Simple on-off beam releases are already possible in NX Nastran, but elastic are not. I know there are ways to handle this (springs, etc.) but we would like to migrate are old I-Deas models fully, and since we have fairly huge model-database, it would take a lot of extra hours to modify and update those I-Deas models.

I run both NX AdvSim & FEMAP together with NX Nastran 7.0 solver, and the combination of both pre&postprocessors is great!!. NX AdvSim give fully CAD/CAE integration, maximum productivity, please note not other mothern CAD system offerts the CAE level integration of NX (appart of I-DEAS!!), and FEMAP is the perfect complement of NX AdvSim in CAE features still not migrated from I-DEAS, if exist you have in FEMAP. And both using the same solver, NX NASTRAN 7.0. And the three products are part of the portfolio of SIEMENS PLM Software.

In fact, NX 7.0 still lacks a lot of functionality found in I-DEAS, but this is only a question of time, sort-term time, next May-2010 is the launching time of NX7.5, you will see a lot of CAE pre&postprocessing enhancements. Please note NX AdvSim not only runs integrated with NX Nastran, but do the same job with msc.Nastran, ABAQUS & Ansys.

And for I-DEAS users SIEMENS PLM Software provides the tool CONTENT MIGRATION MANAGER (CMM) that converts the full I-DEAS database (both geometry & FEM/FEA data, fully associated) to NX AdvSim format, with excellent ratios of conversions as being told (I am not I-DEAS user, I don´t have personal experience of using this tool).

In NX7.5 beam elements will be at a great level, with postprocessing enhancements neither supported in FEMAP yet, regarding elastic end releases I will check with NX developpers what plans exist, OK?.

According SIEMENS PLM Software "This is actually an enhancement request related to NX NASTRAN in addition to having NX support it on the pre-processing side. This is something that Model Solution did that NX NASTRAN (and MSC) does not do. It is on the Nastran development team’s enhancement requests list", but, please file an IR with this matter and all others you feel are important for NX & NX NASTRAN, this is the only way to assure that SIEMENS PLM hear the user needs, thanks!!.

Bojanv - The numbering format of the color bar can be controlled by the Format option found under the Annotation tab in the Post View dialog.
