Hello,
Does enyone know good software for torsion, warping constant and shear properties calculation (including shear centre) for extruded aluminium shapes.
Thanks in advence

I've used Sigma-X to calculate advanced section properties of unsymmetrical concrete box girders. I think it might work for your application. It's available from a firm in Britain. See

Hello,
We have been using Sigma-X section in our office since 2007. It really does everything you would like to get regarding to section properties. The software will determine the properties of any section such as:
-Area
-Inertia
-Elastic Neutral Axis
-Plastic Neutral Axis
-Elastic Modulus
-Plastic Modulus
-Section Centroid
-Torsion Constant
-Warping Constant
-Shear Area
-Shear Centre
-Principal Properties and Equivalent Material Properties of any shaped cross section

You can calculate section properties using both the Boundary Element Method and the Finite Element Method. Section maybe drawn using buidl-in graphical interface (similar to drafting software), or can be imported from AutoCAD (DXF format) or digitised from scanned images. So as you can see for the little price (70$ if I remember right) you can get very powerful piece of software. You could think that for 70$ you will get another piece of junk but beliewe me..it is 100% accurate, very effective time saving "tool".

So again if you are looking for a software which will calculate torsion, warping constant and shear properties I think that the Sigma-X Section is the right choice.

Jorton - from the website you gave, they are an Irish company.

Johnhors - My apologies. You are correct. I have a tendency to lump all of the islands together.

You can try ShapeDesigner at:

Will give you warping and torsion constant and 50+ properties for any section. The software will also calculate various stresses and strains given the loads on the section. If your sections are simple, the free demo version, downloadable from the site, may be sufficient to solve your problems.
