At what approximate temperature and how long will that take? We've been having big issues with heat pattern scale formation on these grades and I'm having trouble narrowing down the window of which to investigate.

My experience is with commercial heat treating, so I'm not sure how applicable this is to service conditions. Our rule of thumb is that steel will develop color around 300°F and above and scale starts to form somewhere in the 900-1000°F range. Scale will definitely form at all temperatures above 1000°F. We typically use times of at least an hour.

Hi again,

That paper for download I gave you last time has this info.

Was it 550C for reasonable scale formation?

As with all metallurgical processes, it's time and temp that relate to reaction - typical arrhenius reactions.

Cheers,
