I am wondering what a typical lightweight aggregate is for CMU blocks. I am working on a project in which our specs call for expanded shale and clay aggregate. I got an RFI from the contractor saying this is out of date and they want to use pumice and granite. Is this common practice? Are there any benefits to using one or the other?

Talk to your local block suppliers and find out from them what is local practice. You can also call the Masonry Society 303-939-9700 ( and discuss it with them.
