We are looking at moving a 80 GAL T3 Ingersoll Rand air compressor setup from one site to another. It has not operated in about 5 years. What requirements are there to ensure it is still fit for purpose? Is a pressure test and NDT required?

Hi Crittenden, you will need to check first if there are or not signs of corrosion atack inside or outside this vessel, then if you consider necessary you need a NDT to confirm or to check the thickness of the tank, and at last you will need to run a hydro or pneumatic test to be sure that is safe to load again this tank.

Thanks Ferdy.

We will be visually inspecting the tank once we get it moved and the mechanic takes off the compressor for servicing.

I'm not familiar with pressure vessels. What code do air compressor receivers fall under? ASME Section VIII? Is there a section that describes what is required?

Yes Crittenden, any vessel that will work with a pressure over 15 psi is considered a pressure vessel and is under the ASME BPVC Section VIII, Div. 1

Suggest that you compare the cost of a pressure test vs. the cost of a new ASME VIII air reciever tank.

I suggest that you purchase a new 80 gallon tank

These tanks are very competitivly priced, widely available

Here is a good place:

Jurisdiction inspection (City or State) if in the uS or Canada,
The Inspector will decide if you should use it or not.
if you think the tank is defective, do not use it.
on the other hand Ingersol industrial put up a v ery good product (heavy duty tanks)
and 5 yrs in storage should not be totally bad. The bottom of the tank may be corroded and UT check is advised.
Code: Nationnal Boar Ispection Code NIC, and Jurisdiction
I California CAL-Osha /DOSH inspects. and it is ilegal to operate w/o a permit.
