In piston powered air compressors, oil is use for lubrication which contaminate the compressed air somewhat. In the application I'm designing, it is desirable to remove the traces of oil so the compressed air is clean. The pressure of the air will be around 100 PSI

What are the different filters I can use for the application, and how long do each last? Are they cartidge based?

Thanks

...also, you may want to consider an oil free piston machine or, depending on the application, an oil free rotary screw compressor.

Non lubricated compressors are your best bet as suggested by JRLAKE.

For filters, you can check Parker and Domnick Hunter. Try to reduce the load on filters by using oil catch and mufflers etc.

Unfortunately, the device I'm designing is powered by a small compressed air tank because portability is very important. It's to be used by the general population so it's important that the tank be easily refilled, therefore, gas station is the best solution. Where else can one easily find non-lubricated compressed air that's clean?

Can a coalescing filter clean the air to a point where it's safe to be breathed? Obviously, it's hard to remove all the oil content, but there must be a point where the concentration is low enough that it's no worse than ambient air.

Thanks

If you are using compressed air for breathing you absolutely MUST use oil free air! NFPA (if you are in the U.S.) demands this.

The use of an oil flooded compressor for breathing air is very irresponsible. What if the coalescing filter fails? Don't do it.

...I meant to say that you must use an oil free air COMPRESSOR.

Coalescing filters can probably remove oil down to about 0.003 ppm. I would not use an oil flooded compressor though, even with the coalescing filter. Filters frequently fail and you may be breaking the law.
