AISC 14th vs 13th edition 3

Folks,

I was familiar with 13th but 14th came up pretty fast! What are the basic or major changes I need to know about this 14th edition ? Especially design wise.............

It’s a two pronged effort on AISC’s part. 1.) The more time engineers spend reading the new editions of the manual, to try to find all the insignificant changes, the less time they will have to actually design a steel building. Think of all natural resources being saved with each new edition. They will claim that less and less steel is being used becuase of their codes. They are going to start promoting this vast material savings as their effort toward the green revolution. 2.) Then, the more frequently they publish, and the more complicated they make the design process, the more money they make by printing manuals and design guide books. Their advice center will truly become a profit center as fewer and fewer engineers can keep up with the rate of change, and all steel designes will just be forwarded directly to them to complete, to meet the code of the moment. They are hoping that within a few years the income from the publishing and advice business will outweigh the loss in steel sales. Then, even the steel industry will have to admit that they are selling more paper than steel, and that trees, paper, wood, timber truly are the materials of the future. :)
 
Well, 5 years did pass between the release of the two codes. So, that's a couple more than we usually get with the IBC or with Concrete or such.

In my opinion, there isn't much difference between the two codes. Mostly just an effort to make the provisions a little easier to use. Adding user notes, making editorial changes that sort of thing.

Most of the changes are to the manual, tables and such. Some of the connection stuff in the manual has been improved, clarified, simplified. They added equation numbers to the various equations in the manual for easier reference, for example.

What changed in the spec itself? Off the top of my head:
Swapped chapter C and appendix 7. So, DA method is now the assumed method and alternate methods are referenced in the appendix.

I believe they improved/clarified the single angle code checking procedures.

Some stuff related to composite columns, I think (but I don't use them at all).

Increased bolt shear strengths.
 
HSS Connections chapter (K I think?) is much, much easier to understand. Lots of pictures, telling you when items apply and when they don't.

A lot of codes get flack for unnecessary issues and lots of changes. I don't think is is one of them. Not a whole lot changed and for the most part the stuff that did just changed to clarify what you should have already been doing anyways.

I don't think your assessments is fair. AISC's codes (not the manual) are free to download and their advice is also free. The discussion is about the difference between the 13th (2005) and 14th (2010) editions. Their aren't huge changes between the two. I think Josh covered the main points (I did not look at Sliderule eras link).
 
To add to what Josh already mentioned, there are some changes in the connection design that add a bit of capacity to connections. I don't think it's huge, but it may be worth a glance.
 
Get ready for the 15th Edition! New Specification is released in 2016. AISC is on a 6 year cycle now (every other IBC).
 
I did not know there were any editions past 9th? [bigsmile]
