Any advice on welding AISI 8630 to say A36/50D steel - I get the impression it is possible but not a common choice of steel (low alloy) for welding

8630 will have substantial hardenability, and therefore significant risk of cracking, embrittlement, etc. Arc or beam welding certainly isn't recommended. Can this be friction welded instead?

Yes you can weld this combination but you would need a high pre-heat and PWHT as well. Exact conditions depends on material thickness.

Recommend making the dissimilar metals weld with E7018 H4R or other low hydrogen process. Minimum preheat and the need for PWHT will be based on the weld joint geometry. I would recommend a minimum preheat temperature of 350F and would raise it depending on joint restraint. If PWHT over 1150 F is required, I would recommend E7018-A1 H4R or equivalent.
