AISI and SAE Materials 5

Hello,

I am new to AISI and SAE materials, my background is in ASME. My question is when I get a Material Test Report for, just as an example, AISI 304, how do i check the chemistry and mechanical tests to ensure they are correct? I am used to ordering material to ASME standards and using those code books for the verification, but from the research I have done it seems as though that is not the same case for AISI or SAE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AISI/SAE standards refer only to chemical composition. These standards are published as UNS (Unified Numbering System) standards by ASTM/SAE (SAE HS-1086/ASTM DS56L). For each material this book references ASME, ASTM, and other standards that call out the material if you are looking for code material, but it is up to you to identify which of these is applicable.

Thank you for that explanation. I had a feeling that was the situation.

 

AISI no longer publishes these standards, it is done by SAE.
So correct form is 'SAE 1020', but everybody will understand what is meant if you call it 'AISI 1020'.
