Any ideas on this one? Computer issue?

The model is a simple frame of square tubing, midplane meshed. The frame is ~30x30x96, so it's somewhat large, and I'm using a .25 mesh with six r6" refined areas with .10 mesh there. It takes 20-30 minutes to run the analysis so it doesn't seem like I'm asking that much.

I have run this various times and sometimes it will run ok, sometimes not, and I get this error. Running Algor V21 on a Pentium 4, 3.2 ghz, 3gb ram. I ran in the same analysis in V20.3 with the same problem. What's strange to me is when I get this error it will show the results of the displaced model but when I go to vonmises stress then I will get this error. The model will show, but it's gray- no shading or stress values.

My algor tech guy couldn't help. TIA.

Consider migrating to a 64bit machine running XP64, and you probably won't see this problem.

StevePAA,

I recently had a similar problem and had to upgrade my RAM to 3GB. Since you already have 3Gig, I assume the /3GB switch is thrown so that your computer recognizes all 3. If so, make sure you do not have a virus scan running (shut it down temporarily if you do), and stop all non-critical processes to free up as much RAM as possible. If that doesn't work, the 64-bit machine may be the way to go...it will recognize much more RAM.

By the way, where are you that your tech rep couldn't help?

thanks for the quick answers. Typo in my original post, I have 2gb ram. We thought this might be the problem and are going to add another 2, figuring it will use ~3 total. Would love to have a 64bit machine, but will see how the additional ram works first. I will follow up after the ram install and let you know if it works. thanks again.

Gbor, I am in TN and called Algor via phone. Not sure what you meant.

Steve,

Unless I'm mistaken, a 32 bit machine will only recognize 3GB of RAM. Even then, you have to throw a 3GB switch in the configuration files for the machine to recognize the third Gig. Don't waste money on the 4th Gig...your machine can't recognize it without the 64bit operating system.

As for the "where are you", this is an international community. Wasn't sure if you were in a country where tech support is limited...

Are you using an iterative solver? They typically require much less memory than a direct solver does. I haven't used Algor in a couple of years but perhaps try the AMG solver if it's available to you?

Consider turning off your Virus Scan. Which Virus Scan do you use ? I have seen such problems with Algor when I was using Norton.

DLT

thanks to everyone for the tips. Yes, I always turn off the virus scan, in this case zone alarm, when using algor. Zone alarm is extremely picky! RAM is supposed to be here tomorrow so I should know something this week.

an update on this. Put in the 4gb of RAM in the middle of last wk- machine sees 3.25. This definitely helped- runs much faster and also handles the analyses better. I've still seen this error a couple of times after getting the results and jumping around and hiding elements, etc, even with the additional RAM, but if I exit algor and re-open the analysis it will be ok- whereas before it would just die.
