In the AISC ASD Steel Manual (9th Ed.), p. 5-46 (Chapter F of the specs), it states that equation (F1-8) "is applicable only to sections with a compression flange that is solid and approximately rectangular in cross-section..."

My question: do S-shapes have an approximately rectangular flange? I would say yes even though the flanges are sloped on either side of the web. Another colleague on mine isn't so sure so I figured I'd see what anyone here might have to say...

Thanks for any input,

Matt

breaks,

Any member or shape that has a value for d/Af in the properties tables applies for this formula. This includes W,S,C, and MC shapes.

Thanks, Tankman. This makes sense.
