hi,
we have a problem with specification concerning spacing of two butt welds. our client specification and my company's procedure did not incorporate this spacing. the problem now is , the client is insisting the minimum spacing should be 100 mm ,no reference, and we have over twenty welds below this requirement (70~80 mm).
all the welds are very thick sections which require post weld heat treatment. the welds passing through excessive heating would result to being brittle . i am right to say the pwht would normalized these HAZ as to use these joints (though it is actually a design problem). if yes, pls. is it possible to have pdf of a reference code or document.
thank.

I have not seen a code that specify the minimum spacing between welds. Based on my experience we have been using a standard spacing of 50mm or 4 x WT whichever is greater and no problem so far.
