Alloy steel bar properties - Year 1962

Dear All,

I have liquid spring bracket detail drawing dated 1962. Bracket has 4 No. pins. Pins are made from "Alloy steel bar spec 3W.9C" or it can read BW.9C. I'm not 100% percent sure it's 'C' at the end as well. The drawing is very old and not clear unfortunately.

Could anybody help me to find out what properties of above mentioned alloy are or where to look for relevant information?

it appears that you may have a call out for a Tungsten Tool Steel probably of the cold work variety. The only problem for ms is that I haven't seen any Carbon above .6C. I'm still looking.

Any additional information about use and function might help.

A posted copy of the print would help.

thank you for your reply. I can not unfortunately post a drawing here.

The pin I'm itrested in is holding the spring, part of shock absorbing system.

if you look at this picture, you'll understand what i mean

it illustrates the idea


bottom bar is my pin, it's holding shock absorbing system attached to the bracket, bracket is fixed to solid foundation.

As I understand it the pin fits in the yoke of shock. The Tungsten Tool Steel were very tough and could have been used in this application.
A good material to use would be an S-7 material which has very good impact resistance and very good wear resistance.

The reason for the print was during this peroid it was quite common to mention specific products by name instead of a generic steel call out.

I'm still looking for a specific reference for your material. The problem is that I've let most of my tool steel comparison charts get away.
 
That's right, the pin fits in the yoke of shock.

So what is correct spec for the bar 3W.9C or BW.9C and what it all means? is W there for wolfram? Is .9C means 0.9% carbon content by weight?
