Hi,

I have to plan an aluminium fork for steering-gear but I'm uncertain as to which alloy to choose...This fork have some problems of vibrations and fatigue...but the fatigue behaviour of alluminium alloys is not much well-known.

Thank you!!

You could choose any alloy as long as you made the dimensions large enough to keep the induced stresses below the fatigue limit.

If you have more information, we can provide more recommendations.

If I understand the type of part you are describing, these forks or yokes are typically cold forged from alloy EN AW-6082 (DIN EN 573-3). This alloy is heat treated to either the T6 or T8 condition to develop optimium mechanical properties.

I have to choose the alloy for the forks. They are stressed (vibrations) and I don't think that AW 6082 is the better choice...maybe 8090 is better because the fatigue crack growth resistance is higher than that of the AW 6082 alloy
