Alternate welding method for stud welding

Hey folks,

Just looking for some input on using an alternate method of welding studs to plate other than 'conventional' stud welding.

I am assuming that the stud can only be a mild steel which will limit its structural performance if it is welded to plate via a complete pen weld by pencil point or chisel point prep.

The original planned stud was a M16 Nelson stud which is comparable to A325.

I don't have one handy, but there are approved procedures for fillet welding the studs to a member.

Would that typically be for mild steel of the 60ksi (A307) variety i wonder? I cant see that working for 120ksi heat treated studs of the ASTM A449 variety...

Drawn arc stud welding is obviously the standard process. There are some different steels that are available for higher strength applications. Here are some websites with additional information:

Friction welding is technically possible, but is usually limited to joining axisymmetric components. You may want to review the websites of manufacturers like MTI Welding or Thomson for more information:

Fillet welding is used for larger diameter studs in field applications.

Well folks, it turns out that the fabricator does have nelson stud welding capabilities & procedures, and this was all just an excercise in trying to frustrate me. Thanks for all the input ppl, I may follow this up a little bit for future record.
