What affects the ductility of AB1 material? Water-cooled electrode clamps are cracking after 2 months service. Tensile test pieces taken from the casting after servicve gave elongation values 1% (in the as-cast condition they were 13%). The chemical analysis is within specification. I know that gamma 2 phase can form if the material is heated in the region 400-560 deg. C but I can not see much of this phase present. Can anyone help?

IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING MAY VERY WELL BE THERMAL SHOCK. REPEATED HEATING AND COOLING WITHOUT GRADUAL AMBIENT TEMPERATURE CHANGE IN THE COOLING MEDIUM CAN CAUSE THIS EFFECT.....ESPECIALLY IN CAST MATERIALS
