I'm in the process of prototyping a part that will eventually be made in 380 Die Casting Aluminum. I will do some strength and endurance testing with this material and the best match I have found as far as surface hardness and yield strength is 6061 T4. Nobody seems to have this material readily available, so I was wondering if anybody knew the heat treating process of annealling 6061 T6 down to T4??

Or if anybody has any other suggestions

Thanks

We use 6061 T4 in aircraft repair. We get it in bars and rounds. It should not be that hard to find. T6 can be anealed. I don't have the process in front of me will try to find it when I get to work. Gary

Do you have any info as far as where I can order this material (with a short lead time....of course).

I think that 6061 T6 is obtained from 6061 T4 by annealing at 180°C for several tens of hours ; so to get 6061T4 from 6061T6 you would need to heat treat your 6061 T6 again : that is heat it up and quench it again so that you get a strong metal that welds more easily than 6061T6 but has lower mechanical characteristics.
I hope this helps...

How much do you need. We may have
some 6061t6 in stock. We use this
sometimes to make bearings for the
military. We also have heat treat
facilities. You may call thru the
day at Rotek Inc. 330-562-4000

the morning for a physical exam
and some blood work.
