I have a question about aluminum polishing and aluminum deoxidizer used on aircraft skins, spinners, propellers, and other components to make them shine. Most of the General Aviation skins are 2024-T3 clad aluminum in most cases. I know the alclad has about 0.003 inches thick pure aluminum to protect the base metal from corrosion, but many owners like to polish the skins and propeller to make them shine. Some of the spinener are made of 6061 and propeller are in a class of there own and very few of those are allowed to be polished.
My question is using an aluminum deoxidizer that in effects etches the surface to remove stains what would be the longterm effects of not getting all the agent out of the seams. Second, what effect does it have around fastener heads? Third, should it be used at all?
I have not read where any manufacture recommends a deoxidizer for their product can anyone provide some insight on this type of agent and its effects and aircraft materials.
