Structural

Hi there,

I’m interested in seeing if someone has compiled a list of aluminum structures around the world. I am looking for structures of any kind where aluminum is the primary load bearing element. An example of this is Kanazawa Station in Japan ( I am looking to see if there is already of list of aluminum structures or a good way to find them.

Thanks in advance!

John

You might quarry aluminum and aluminum shape producers, or aluminum fabricators, they should know who their primary customers are and what those customers products are. What about the Aluminum Association and other such organizations, code writers, and the like, which serve large segments of the whole aluminum industry? They might know what percentage goes to what products, and have some lists and examples. It is used a lot for making transportation equipment and the like, to save weight of the vehicles, improve payload and reduce motive energy needs. In fixed structures, weight savings may not be as important a feature as corrosion resistance, etc. One of its biggest drawbacks is that it is usually used in a tempered state/form for improved strength, and welding as a means of fabricating becomes a problem. Since, in the immediate area of the welds the material is essentially reduced to its untempered state, and a much lower stress level.

jseng9....Aluminum is very expensive and is usually used for peripheral structures....canopies, shading, etc.

Check the Dittmer Aluminum website....they have provided some significant aluminum structures over the years. I did their structural design for over 20 years and did the majority of their structures from 1985 through 1995.....these included such items as a 100+ foot span on a truss, a complete upper structure for the Miami Area Metro-Rail system and numerous other various structures, in addition to the "mundane" walkway canopies.

Thanks everyone for the references! I really appreciate it :)

The guys at National Grid up in the Northeast USA (Boston area) use aluminum lattice structures in some of their Electric Substations to support wires and equipment.
