Howdy all,

We have a drawing that calls out AMS 4631, however we have on hand AMS 4634. These have the same composition and temper. Can anyone indicate what the distinction is between these so we can determine if we can substitute one for the other? Is it just bar stock vs rod stock? We don't want to buy two specs just to determine the difference.

Thanks,

We went ahead and bought the two specs, and I'm still not sure what the difference is. As far as I can tell, AMS4631 is an old spec that is no longer updated (Stabilized!). The composition is stated slightly differently. The tensile properties are slightly different. AMS4634 has a second option for embrittlement testing.

I think the AMS4634 is a more modern spec and they are otherwise equivalent. If anyone can share more details to complete my understanding I would appreciate it.

Best Regards,

You can ask your supplier to provide certification of the material for both AMS 4634 and 4631.
