can someone tell me the difference between addressable and analog addressable fire alarm systems. I have heard several explanations, but none make complete sense.

My take is

an addressable system is one that an address is assigned to EACH device like a home address on a street block.

Analog is can have a smoke detector set so that it may not be as sensitive in one room as opposed to another room. So if you have a dirtioer envioroment in one room you can set the detector to that enviroment so it does not alarm as quick as a normal detector would.

The detector must still meet the conditions for its listing but bascialy it is adjustable for the condtions it is put in.

Analog System - A fire alarm system which measures how much of a substance exists at an automatic initiating device contrasted with a conventional system, which can only determine whether the initiating device is on or off (in alarm or not in alarm). Measurements may include smoke density (percent obscuration), temperature, water level, air pressure, etc.

Also some panels and devices can be checked from th panel for the annual inspection.
Some systems the smoke detecor will tell you when it is starting to get dirty and needs cleaning
