This was reported by JStephen (Mechanical) in the I 195 (RI) bridge closure thread.

STEPHENS COUNTY, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – The “Mile Long” Bridge in Breckenridge will remain closed due to threat of collapse, causing a disaster declaration to remain in place for residents in that area.

Information is rather thin,

“So we contacted TxDOT; they assured us they thought it was cosmetic because there had been a recent inspection — I don’t know how recent– and they were going to go out and look at it,” the sheriff said.
The "Look" resulted in emergency closure for repairs.

Such concern in a situation where only a few days ago County Sheriff’s Office were happy to have hundreds of heavy trucks and thousands of passenger vehicles passing over it every day.

Sheriff's department is not an engineering organization, and they only know what they are told. The sarcasm should be directed at the DOT responsible for inspections and maintenance.

The point is the Sheriff is not concerned with those who created the dangerous situation but is more than willing to go after the victims who are desperate to avoid an extra couple of hours a day on the road.

Isn't that a fun quirk?

Why would the department believe anything the Texas DOT said? They are clearly unreliable.

Isn't that a fun quirk?

I don't know about fun, but it's also a matter of containing future risk; anyone who does become the stick that broke the camel's back is like to cost in rescue/recovery, ancillary damage, unexpected cleanup, etc. Plus, I don't think DOT really wants to know how close they were to disaster/deaths.

The DOT is certainly capable of installing concrete barriers to block access to the bridge that won't be easily moved.

What the Sheriff is saying is - I'll allow people to move the barriers, cross the bridge, and then collect fines and support for the prosecution of those who do so.

It's not important enough to station officers at the bridge. It's only important to prosecute.

The Sheriff isn't worried at all about future risk or he would talk effective measures to eliminate that risk as would the DOT.

I think there's more than the bridge that's broken...

Thats Wilie Cayote & Road Runner territory. Surprised the sheriff just didn't double the speed limit, "FAKE" in small letters, and put a brightly lit cold beer sign, a couple of plywood pickup trucks and a photo-radar station in the middle of the bridge.

Did you ever hit a tumble weed at 120mph?
That really shakes up the tarantulas.

No, but I got smacked on the forehead by a grasshopper about 50 years back at that speed on my motorcycle... always wore a helmet on the highway after that... it's a real awakening.

I always thought that riding in Colombia carried special high risks because of that. They have hoppers that can reach 10"+ size. And moths at night with big hand-sized wings. If they just hit your face while standing under the lights, you get blinded by their wing scale dust getting in your eyes. If you don't wear a face shield while riding there, you just might get a free lunch.

Mine was just a little one... that one may have been definitive... I used to be kinda 'reckless' as a kid... when I got married, I got rid of my bikes.
