another question: RE error message 1

I am creating a very extensive assy, now I was not happy with a previous assy so I deleted it and re-assembled a new assy. so as I am adding in part I notice I need to tweak certain parts because of clearance issues but when I go to "edit part" I get an error message

"this part has features defined in the context of another assy (which so happens to be the assembly I got rid of) you can edit the part can not but cannot creat external references to components of the current assembly"

which sucks because I need to reference a few things within this assembly.

is there ant way to fix this? or am I screwed

No guarantee this will work but ... go to the SW Tools > Options > System options > External references & check mark the Allow multiple contexts for parts when editing in assembly option. Then re-try editing the new part.

Please note ... using this option means that one part could have references to several other parts/assy's & may cause problems with conflicting references & rebuild errors down the road. So use it sparingly.

If you now are allowed to edit the part, you should be able to delete the offending reference & re-create a new one to the new assy. If not then you may well be SOL, but you should be able to find & delete the reference, even if you dont re-create a new one.

You can't reference the same features or sketches in one assembly and expect to be able to do it in another. You Also cannot reference them to other parts of the assembly. Once they are in-contexted they are locked to that feature/sketch that it is in-contexted too.

All that option will do is (CBL) is allow that part to be in-contexted to multiple assemblies, but only the features or Sketches that already not in-contexted to another assembly. SW HIGHLY doesn't recommend it all. Because having Multiple IN-cointexting of one part could cause more harm than good. Think about it... if you had one part in-contexted to 5 assemblies. The complexity alone is crazy. Because if something changes in one assembly it will be reflected in all assemblies... Even if you don't want it too.

Dangerous to say the least. So if you turn that option on your working at your own risk IMO.

Another option would be to highlight the name of the part, right click, then click on "List all references". The "External References for:" window will appear. At the bottom of that window is a box "Break All". This will break all extenal references that have been created between that part and anything else. You will then have to recreate all the references, whether you created them in this assembly or the assembly you deleted.
