The Architect wants a 3 ft. awning over a large portion of this house. Rather than get into using exposed diagonal rods, I suggested we use a system as shown...

Was going to attach with 10d nails but could also use bolts or screws. The loads seem reasonable and the majority of the time it will only have dead load.

I appreciate some feedback.

Thanks!

Oof the moment connection is not so much the problem as is relying on the builder / architect to get the bulk water & insulation details correct at the joint. There have been tremendous and frequent failures of similarly built structures where the joists turn to mush because of water infiltration. Good luck.

If this must be done make sure they
a: take care of the bulk water details...no Tyvek we need proper vapor permeable waterproofing here (see BS VP) to be tied into an adequate flooring system.
b: Sprayfoam the rim joist. I cannot find the exact articles at the moment but search through the BSC insights as they review this in detail (just dont recall where)

I would probably try not to do this but if I must it would be in steel with threaded rods tied back to the sill at the foundation.

Agent666 that is beautiful! What climate is that in?

It was on an offshore island in Auckland Harbour New Zealand. Warm coastal environment. No real extremes hot or cold.

The inside looked pretty sweet as well with the glued portal joints.

I'll let the builder and Arch. figure out the flashing details.

Glad this has come up.....I am on something similar now. (Fortunately, it is a temporary structure.)

The question I have is: does NDS penalize you anywhere for having adjacent fasteners that have load reversal? I can't find anything. I figure if i go with max spacing.....there shouldn't be a issue.

Is that one 2x10 that fastens on the face of a stud? Is it eccentric loading to the stud? I am assuming the 30 psf is 10 psf DL and 20 psf LL.

It appears you have one cantilever joist every 16". What happens at a door or window"

I know of no such thing.

Speaking to XR's original question, I have an idea that I'd like if the project already had an pre-eng truss contract.
