ANSI/HI 9.8 Wastewater Lift Station Design

As I delve into the ANSI/HI 9.8 standard to ensure the accurate design of a wastewater lift station, I have observed that the standard employs the parameter D (bell outside diameter of the pump) for sizing the pump sump. While I know that D represents the outside diameter of suction pipe inside the wet well, I am uncertain about what would be D when utilizing submersible pumps in wet wells. Would it be the diameter of suction opening of the submersible pump or something else?
