Any good BVP software for AS1210?

Hi guys,

I have been asked to investigate or search a suitable software for tank calculation. The software criteria should be easy to study and cover AS 1210, ASME VIII div 1, EN 13445 and NZ code.

If you think you know any good software to try please let me know. I will investigate each software and give a report to my boss.

I knew about compress, but it doesnt support for AS1210.

You asked for software for AS 1210 but you mention tanks. Do you mean pressure vessels?

There is no software for an obsolete design standard called AS1210 ed 1997. It was published in 1997, but it was compiled in 1995, on the basis of then obsolete ASME VIII and some clauses from several european codes. Today, the ASME went throu several revisions and one complete re-write, leaving AS 1210 right behind.
However, there are still some valid points in AS 1210, like hydrotesting, registration and third party verification / inspection, in association and reference to AS 4343, 3920, etc...
The PV Elite provides wind and seismic design based on Australian conditions, but not vessel design calculations per AS 1210.
The last available software was "PRESTO" developed in Melbourne, but the creator gave up selling the software in around 2000 or 2001, after the DLI gave up checking the designs. It was far too expensive and the ASME design with some AS 1210 adaptations made it well with the local authorities. Sorry, no local good news, but hope the new edition of AS 1210 (currentlyin the tube) will bring an updated local software.

It is a surprise that AS1210 is an obselete.

Anyway i have read AS 1210 and ASME VIII, i would say that ASME VIII is more comprehensive than AS1210. However, many clients in here (New Zealand) want AS 1210 as the code standard for design and fabrication. I am sure that i will eventually use ASME VIII as the code standard in near future.

Got more info regarding the software ??? please let me know

Technically, the AS 1210 ed 1997 is still a valid standard, but the content is somehow obsolete. By the way, the compliance to AS 1210 required in NZ is in fact the hydrotest given by the formula in AS 1210, which is/may be different from the one calculated in ASME UG-99(b). This is a requirement from the local authorities and is a condition for the vessel registration.

AS1210 is still valid and its conntent - no matter how of date - is relevant unless superceded by an adendum or client requirement.

The authorirtes will use the latest issue of AS1210 in their review - no matter how out of date it is with other codes.

Also take care with flange design. AS1210 still uses the old ASME values for design stress not the new ones.

It's all correct Roca, but when was last time you completed a vessel design to AS 1210, tens and tens of pages of hand calculations...All I can see these days are the PV Elite calculations and a couple of pages (if any) of hand calculations for "compliance" with AS 1210. As I said, AS 1210 is technicaly still valid, but just not used any longer...I am however, very hopeful of the new edition, which is imminent (keep fingers crossed).

gr2 vessels - nearly all vessels built in Australia are to AS1210 & the designers use AS1210 & their own software. It is only those from overseas that may be to ASME. Even though AS1210 is seriously late with its new edition it is still ahead of ASME technically in many areas & it is certainly much easier to use than ASME. Most Australian fabricators & designers have their own software & hence there is no demand for a commercially available package. It is unlikely any software will be commercially available in the future due to lack of demand as current users have their own.

Hi guys thank you for all the comment. I do myself create the spreadsheet software. But just wondering if there will any commercial software regarding AS1210 including the calculation based on AS/NZS 1170.

When I worked for Australasia's largest Stainless Steel pressure vessel Fabricator 90% of NZ/Australian Vessels were designed to AS1210. Any vessels destined other countries were never designed to AS1210. So if you live outside NZ Australia then I would understand people saying AS1210 is obsolete.

I don't expect there would be any design packages for AS1210 as it is not a complex code. In my first design project I converted AS1210 to automated spreadsheet quicker then designing with Pen and Paper. I doubt a software package is commercially viable. The same goes for PD5500. It was much more cost effective to convert it to spreadsheet. I don't expect PVElite would be making money if it left out ASME and only designed to PD5500.

The Australian Heat Exchanger Tubesheet code was far simpler then ASME VIII UHX section and produced a tube sheet two thirds the thickness of ASME. I find ASME to be quite conservative.

If you dont trust spreadsheets then use Mathcad. The calculations are easier to check and you have unit consistency.

Calculations presented to third parties are logical in Mathcad.

In my opinion it is too easy to make mistakes in Excel and it is very difficult to check calculations.

I agree with you that spreadsheet in Excel is easy to make mistake. that's whay i am just thinking if there will be any software outside..i think it is better to verify the spreadsheet calculation with other software
