Hi,

I am in the Aerospace industry. I am looking for Indox V magnet. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone have any tips on where to find it? I know that an alternate to Indox V is Ceramic 5. But, getting our customer to change the drawings will take a long time, due to testing, deviation, etc. Please provide any tips you have. Thanks.

Indox was a trade name for a ceramic magnet. The trademark went to dead status in 1999. It is not likely that you will find any unless the original trademark owner wants to sell you more and simply call it Indox.

Sounds like your company needs a parts obsolescence department to keep track of parts and materials that go obsolete.

I'd give a call to a major magnet supply source like MCE.

They will probably know the charastics of Indox V and be able to supply an equivelant certified to be a generic with as good as or better specs than the original material.

Thank you for your replys. Last year, we were able to get Indox 5 through Midwest Industries, Inc. But now, they've ran out of it. MJR2, u are right. I've been told by a few sources that it was just a tradename used by Indiana General. It was basically ceramic 5 that they were using. Sreid, thanks, but I have contacted MCE. They couldn't help me. In fact, I've contacted many magnet suppliers regarding Indox 5. But no luck. Our purchasing agents and our customer's purchasing agents also could not find any Indox 5 available. This is like looking for a needle in a hay stack, but there's a possibility that there is no needle.

Does anyone know where I can get an actual spec sheet for the original Indox V so that I can prove that it is identical to Ceramic V?

I don't have an actual spec sheet, but I do have an old Permag catalog that mentions the magnetic properties:
Indox 5
Br: 3840 Gauss
Hc: 2200 Oersted
BHmax: 3.5 MGOe
These are probably nominal values

Just to balance out sreid's comments, here are equivalent materials from other potential suppliers (admittedly US-based)
Dexter Mag Tech - HF050 - Br=3800 Gauss, Hc=2500 Oersted, BHmax=3.4 MGOe
Dura Magnetics - Duramax5 - Br=3950 Gauss, Hc=2400 Oersted, BHmax=3.6 MGOe
Quadrant Magnetics - Ceramic 5 - Br=3800 Gauss, Hc=2400 Oersted, BHmax=3.4 MGOe
Magnet Sales - Grade 5 - Br=3950 Gauss, Hc=2400 Oersted, BHmax=3.6 MGOe

Thank you guys for helping. MagMike, since you said you got those spec from Purma, I did a bit of research. Purma was bought out by Dexter in the 80s. So I contacted Dexter for some help in digging up old specs on Indox V. They've sent me an Indiana General spec sheet from back in the days. On the spec sheet, it says "Indox (Ceramic) V". Hopefully this can convince our customer that Indox and Ceramic are identical. Thanks!!
