Hi All,
I have a (non aerospace) installation where due to a lack of access I was considering using either a socket head bolt or 12 point head bolt and I would apply the torque from the head side while holding the nut fixed with a custom made tool. I think you would usually apply the torque from the nut side, is doing it this way a problem?
I am using 1/2 dia bolts, with enough torque to reach 75% yield strength of the bolt.
The advantage of using these bolts as opposed to a hex head bolt is that a smaller socket is required for the same diameter bolt.
Thanks

That should not be a problem. If you use the socket head screw design, make sure that you add a hardened washer under the head to distribute the contact stress; those bolts were originally designed for tool and die work in hard steel and the underhead bearing surface is too small for average use.

Great thanks for the replies, we have decided to go ahead with the socket head bolt plus a washer.
