hi,
here is the environmental data for gas oilfield. could you please tell how to calculate for selection of material.
any such software offered for sales?
thanks

Nothing that CS won't handle. You might want to look at HIC carbon steel because of the H2S and water. In any case stay with mild Grade B or X-42, no high strenght materials.

And just why is carbon steel acceptable dcasto? Have you calculated a corrosion rate? Do you know what oilmandoo's approach to inhibition and maintenance is? Do you believe the pH value quoted?

There are several examples of commercial software that will help you with predicting corrosion but very, very few that will select materials for you. You might like to investigate this one:

I can't vouch for it personally as I still think a qualified and experienced corrosion engineer is better.

The formula to calculate the Corrosion Rate for Carbon Steel in upstream oil & gas is based on the DeWaard-Milliams Model. The first model was formulated in the 1991 and the there has been a lot of improvement during the years.
There are a lot of papers that describes the model and also a lot of good Software.
One is free and allow you to calculate the Corrosion Rate, you can dowloaded it free from NORSOK. There is also a paper that describe the model and the various factors that are used to calculate the Corrosion Rate. This software doesn't give you a materials selection but only the Corrosion rate on Carbon Steel due to CO2:

Another one that give you also a suggestion for materials selection is the Socrates from Intercorr.

and then there is also the Software cited by SJones from Intetech.

or you if you have time you can build your own software with , for example, excell, using the papers that describes the model.

If you need more help let me know.

hope this can help you

Leaks on a spiral weld pipe laid in the 1930's to inconel pipe today.

I'll admit there is not enough information to make an absolute answer. There needs to be a time money evaluation. If it is projected the life of the wells to be 100 years and the pressure is 5000 psig, then you may want to invest in inconel. But most wells are 20 year propositions and the pressures decline so the risk of pipe failures decreases. Hence carbon steels are used.

Thank you all for the information.
Appreciate if you can inform where I can source or buy software to calcuate the data and select appropriate materials for such wells.
