What is a suitable replacement for 36" dia. API 5L normalized pipe? What difference does the normalizing process make in ratings?

A-53 Gr B is a replacement, normalizing "normalizes" the grain boundary and prevents brittleness created during production, and non uniform grain boundary.
 
What grade is the 5L pipe? 5LB? 5LX-? A-672 C65 to C70 Claases 30 thru 33 would be a better substitute for 5LB normalized.

A-53B is not in the same category.

 
Several years ago, when I was on API 5, the specifications tried to avoid telling mfgrs how to make pipe( eg.- normalize), but focused on properties. A notable exception was normalize/ recrystallize of ERW seams. Has that principle changed ? Also ,my 1990 ed. of A53 permits seamless, ERW and furnace weld -I doubt you will find any of those in 36". Try A 671, I expect it is still set up with a variety of HT options in welded pipe. Be careful of NDE if you go with spiral weld.

I don't know what any of that means. Normalizing as it applies to carbon steel refers to heating so the entire structure reverts to austenite, then cooling at a sufficient rate to produce a fine-grained structure.
Finer grain size is the only important strengthening mechanism that can also improve fracture toughness.
 
Brimstoner, when you manufacture steel, weld, etc, you create martensitic regions etc in the heat affected zones, normalizing is to remove these microstructure "imperfections", then you would slowly cool the microstrucutre to allow time for the grain boundaries to become uniform (as you said this results in a much finer grain in the microstructure) which increases strength of the material.

Stanweld, I misread, I understand it is not Gr B 5L pipe, but you should not be using A53 Gr A for most piping applications.

As far as grade of of material, these materials are good mettalurgical replacements, however neither are recommended for 36" pipe per ASTM.
 
If the pipe is 36" OD, unlikely that it is grade B...More likely X60/65/70.

itstru58: what is the wall thickness and maximum pressure the pipe will operate? What is the application, i.e. water, gas, oil, construction code (API 1104, ASME IX,), etc.
 
Hey Eddycurrentguy, The line spec. calls for DSAW, pipe, API 5L, API 5L Gr. B PSL 1, BE Normalized, pre-paint This is a cooling water service, 120 degrees F , 42 PSIG
 
JMoore1, you are trying to confuse me I think. Manufacturing steel is not really that much like welding, except they both involve molten metal at some stage. Martensite is not normally created in the plate/pipe manufacturing process.
 
My apologies...I'm used to dealing with high pressure gas/oil/steam applications...

For your stated design condition, normalized pipe is not necessary.
