API 6 A Valve. Body Machined from Forged Cylinder/Forged Cube?

Hello All

Is it permissible (or is it prohibited) to Machine a 9" Valve (Flanged) body from a Forged Cylinder of 500mm dia and 200 mm high or a forged cube of 450mm side?

Is it mandatory to forge the component as close as possible to final shape or is it permitted to machine the part from a forged cube or forged cylinder.

If there is a prohibition, request you to provide me the reference clause of API 6 A.


Material under discussion is AISI 4130.
PSL 2.

Of course it is permissible. It is also permissible to machine the valve body from hot finished bar.

What is the purpose of using a forging if the advantage of grain structure control is wasted?

1. You know you have a heavy-wall chunk of metal with good integrity
2. You don't have to invest in a pattern.
3. You don't have to wait on a foundry cycle.

I have a B16.34 control valve on order that is a machined forging or billet. This is acceptable for low volume specialty products rapid delivery requirements. The valves weigh more due to the surplus body material.

It's probably for 2-1/16" 10M valve body. I have this pattern for close die forged. The delivery is rapid if you demand.
