API 620 Vs API 653

[GasProcess]

A refrigerated Butane storage tank is fabricated as per API 620.

Now repair is required to replace the some of the shell portions. Is API 653 correct standard to follow the repair procedure? API 653 states that it is for tanks fabricated to API 650.

If API 653 is not correct standard then which standard is to be followed

Any help will be greatly appreciated

API 579 for ASSESSING various defects..and suggest remedials..
This is given in paragraph 1.2.2 (= scope) of API -579

It is expected that API 653, and the other inspection/derating/ repair ones ( I believe API 510 and 570 ??) for vessels and piping will be obsolete ..who knows..

My personal opinion.

Could you share a bit more info about the tank? Is it a flat bottom tank, sphere or horizontal bullet?

My feeling is that API 653 is primarily intended for inspection and evaluation of API 650 tanks, however the basic inspection practices can be used for evaluating tanks built to other standards. When it comes to evaluating these however it will be ineffective. My feeling is that API 579 could provide some guidance, but API 620 should be the primary reference.

Although API-653 was written primarily for API650 and 12C tanks, it may be applied to any tank constructed to a recognized tank standard. However, little guidance is offered for doing so.
