I will be recertifying for 653 and the effectivity sheet for this cert says to use the Tenth edition of API 650 Add. 1 to 4. I was told by the API rep. that it is correct and to use that as study material. I have the Eleventh edition and she said I would have to buy the Tenth edition to take the quiz, is this correct? Sorry, it just doesnt make sense.

I was in your exact situation when i certified 3 years back. There was a new addendum out for 653 i believe. I ordered my books from a supplier who sells you books based on the body of knowledge required, as most do.

Of course, i received the newest edition of the books, however the body of knowledge showed an older addendum that was required.

I was told that the questions used would have only one correct answer that would be correct to both editions/addendums. I was told that they would not have any questions which would have a right answer according to the old addendum and a right answer according to the new addendum. The answers would apply to both editions or addendums. if not, they wouldnt use the question.

I,personally, didnt run into ANY problems with the two different addendums. if you run into a problem, challenge the question and you should be credited.

I took the API 653 on 10th edition last year. We just got the 11th edition in, and I have not used it much, but I notice sections are moved around..(ie Chapter 3 Design from 10th ed is now in Chapter 5). This should not necessarily make a difference to the content but might make it harder if you are studying with any material which refers you to a section in new Code -which will not be same as section in your old code.. There are some changes in content between 10th and 11th ed (I cannot tell you how many) but check out
<<which has some good info on changes in new edition.

It might help if you asked an instructor of the course about policy if there is discrepancy in an answer between editions, not only the person at the organization signing you up for the class...
