Hello friends,

Can anyone help me with an interpretation for API 6A's 7.3.4.6 regarding Impact testing for welding procedure qualification. I am particulary interested in the first statement as this is vague when im translating it in my native language and it is not clear when you have to perform this test.

The first line simply states that if the items that you are welding together require an impact test then you must also impact test the weld. When you perform the impact test you have two options for the test procedure ASTM A370 or ISO 148-1. If you chose the ISO standard the striker must have an 8mm radius.

The PSL and temperature class requirements of the components you are welding together will determine weather or not you need to have an impacts test. API 6A's determination of the what combinations of those two factors require an impact test is given in Table 9 of section 6. In standard practice many API manufacturers give their products a combined temperature range of P to U for a range of -20F to 250F which will always require an impact test for the weld procedure.
