dear friend
If you supose a pipe as a shell it is posible.see UG on asme code viii-div 1

Sir,
API 5L pipe is quite similar to SA / A-106 gr. B pipe.
You can require and get dual certificated material in order to use it according to ASME Code definitions.

Approval for using a pipe for shell of a vessel is on UCS-27 Shells Made From Pipe.
You have to consider notes G3 and G24 to table 1A (regarding the stress values and joint efficiency factor).

Dear degas
If you check the ratio of yeild to tensile of materials that have been accepted by ASME code and compair with the API material it will be appeared that there is many diference together. I think that using the API material is not so safe for design according to ASME. I think that you have to forget it unless you can get the approval from ASME commities.
