Dear all, I work in water sector and I am new to the API requirements. For a cooling water BB1 pump the custoimer wants API plan 23/62 + cooling plan M. I have seen drawings of both the plans but I do not know how both of these plan work in combination i.e. 23/62. Does this mean that I need to consider a double acting mechnaical seal ? or this can be applied to a single acting mechanical seal as well (How?). In water industry the standard seal plan is plan 11, sometimes we have double acting seal (for low inlet pressure) with thermosyphon but never encountered anything other than this.

Q: 8095 m3/hr
H: 35 m
P: 873 kW
Liquid temp.: 33°C (Max 102°C)
NPSHav: 6.84 m
Mechanical seal as per API 682 (Again the pump shaft dia is above 110 mm, API 682 should not apply here but the customer doesnt understand this)!

Thank you for your advice.

Can you provide a schematic of "API plan 23/62 + cooling plan M"?

Good luck,
Latexman

To a ChE, the glass is always full - 1/2 air and 1/2 water.

I do not have a schematic for API plan 23/62 + Cooling plan M, this is a customer requirement. I want to understand the requirement before discussing with the customer/ vendor.

Use your Google-fu. It's out there.

I can find schematic for Plan 23, 62 and cooling plan M separately, that is not the question, i was more interested in knowing how they work together. i.e. for a double acting M seal, on process side plan 23 (Internal Flush) and on the atmospheric side plan 62 (External quench), right? How about for the single acting mechanical seal? The cooling plan M doesn’t necessarily involves the connection to the Pump so I do not concern much for that. I want to understand the basic principal for operating two API seal plan together. I understand the working individually but not combined working of plan 23 and 62.
