Hello all,

I have a question regarding the differences between API5L vs 2B.

Currently I only have the Specification for 5L and I am curious if in either the US or Canada you can use these members in structural applications?
Or if pipe is being used in a structural application does it have to fall under the 2B specification. Not entirely sure what would be the differences between the two.

Also if the answer to the above question is yes, is the range of selection of sizes and yielding strengths similar between the two specifications?
Can the Gradex52, and up, be achieved with 2B Spec?

Any help would be appreciated!

To the first of your several questions: since API Spec 5L materials are included in the material listings of API RP 2A, the answer would appear to be yes for an offshore structure.

2B is a fabrication specification, it is not a grade selection or designation specification since it is open to the starting material specified by the purchaser.

Ah I see.

So 2B is an additional specification to ensure proper fabrication for structural application.
I had that suspicion based on all the search results I found online, but I just wanted to make sure the 2B didn't prohibit certain sizes from being used in structural applications.

Not too familiar with the API set of guidelines. I may purchase the document for a read now knowing its purpose.

Thank you for the help!
