UG-44(b)(4) formula is used only if you want to evaluate the flange joint for the external loading. For this, you have to know the piping load (forces and moments) exerted on the vessel flange.Hi Friends,
Is it acceptable to use the UG-44(b)(4) formula given below to confirm the pressure temperature rating of an aluminium pipe standard flanges allowed as per Code Case 2905?

What evaluation do you want to do? Because the flange is part of the pressure vessel (ASME Sec VIII Div 1), you will first design the PV using tools like COMPRESS, PV ELITE and then run WRC 107/537 typically built to the design tool. The verification is for the local stress on the vessel nozzle intersection.Hi,
Thanks for the responses.
I think I have not made myself very clear in the post above.
The scenarion is that I am using Aluminium Weld Neck Flanges (1" NPS) on a pressure vessel. Since ASME B16.5 does not have Aluminium Flanges, I resort to code case 2905 that allows the use Aluminium flanges as per Appendix-L of ASME 31.3. on pressure vessel and select the pressure temprature rating accordingly.
Now my question is that is it acceptable to use the formula given in UG-44(b)(4) for evaluating the selcted aluminium flange based on the piping loads? If not , is there a procedure in ASME 31.3 to evaluate these flanges?
Kind Regards.
