I need some help. Anyone know how to calculate force?
Here's my situation- We have an old Cincinnati horizontal Milling machine. It is 20 hp running at 455 spindle rpm.
I am trying to calculate the applied force on a Weiss rotary table for this machine. The index table is 8" tall and then we run a fixture that is another 8.125" tall. So the total height above the table where the cutter contacts the work is 16.125".
We are feeding the table at 5.2" I.P.M. I need to know the forces to find out what the table should be rated.

To calculate the force and then power, you have to know additionally the following:
1. Properties of the work material. For rough calculations, it ultimate strength is needed - UTS.
2. The depth of cut, i.e. the thickness of the layer being removed - d.
3. How many cutters (for a milling tool) are simultaneously in the contact with the work - n.

Roughly, the cutting force then can be calculates as the product of UTS times the feed per revolution times d times n.

Note, the elevation of your table has no effect on the force generated in cutting.

Are you feeding the workpiece perpendicular or parallel to the cutter spindle?
