Hi to all,

Sorry if this topic was already discussed in other post, I did some search and found no match for my issue.

I work in a company that apply surface treatment on aerospace parts. And we are struglling with some small torsional springs with close wound.

We need to open the spring without causing permanent deformation in order to apply the epoxy prime on it.

Did anyone knows about some dispositive or procedure that I can use or implement in this situation?

Best regards

I think the main consideration is extending the spring enough to get sufficient gaps between the coils to obtain a smooth uniform coat of primer. The gap between coils would probably only need to be .030" or so. You can approximate the safe amount of axial stretch possible with your close wound torsion spring by using the formulas for a close wound extension spring.
